Foundation dogs were selected because of their keen sense of smell and Bloodhounds were also added to the Coonhound line to provide the Coonhound with superb tracking skills. It was in 1912 that the first Black and Tans were registered with the United Kennel Club. In 1945 the American Kennel followed.
