Meet Dougal!
This is Dougal! Dougal is 7 month's. Dougal is a purebred Miniature Schnauzer, purchased from a very good breeder. The breeder is family owned and in business for over 40 years. I found him, fell in love with the silly ball of fur! Before I tell you all the great things about Dougal, I want to tell you why I bought a purebred,(Every family dog was a rescue). Really it's pretty simple. I was lonely, I wanted something warm to curl up with when lonely. I am the Mom of 5 grown kids, minus one son. Our son was a soldier and fought in Iraq for a year. He turned 19 while there. He was a different person when he returned.After trying to find help for his PTSD for a few years, we lost him. We are a Military family. We are so proud of our son, and have made it our mission to recognize, appreciate, help Veteran's in many different ways. I mentioned we are a Military family, here's the breakdown: Husband and I met and married while we both served the AirForce. His Dad, 24 yr retired Marine, purple heart, silver star, inducted in to the Georgia Military Hall of Fame, my step-dad Air Force retired. My husbands brother is an Army Officer, his son also an officer in Army. I mentioned our son who fought in Iraq. Our daughter was in the Army and our youngest son in the Air Force. Our other daughter was hired by the FBI out of Grad School. I know, not Military, but serving our country. We lost our son 6years ago. During this time of getting very involved in helping our Veterans, I have met many Veterans who, like our son, came back suffering from PTSD. I also have the honor of calling Gold Star Mom's our friends. These are families who's Heroes died while serving. I noted that many of our Veterans and family had emotional support dogs. Some of the Heroes had highly trained dogs. Other's had dogs that were registered, yes in order to keep your pup as a support animal, you have to apply for a license type thing to officially use your pet as a support pet. I had actually just started the very simple process when things changed. Why would I sell this sweet, funny pup? Well, priorities. I want a pup friend badly. But, as happens, circumstances in my life have changed and are going to be changing more. These changes make caring for him a challenge. The sooner I can find him a new home, the better for him. I know changing like this will be hard for him. I want to minimize the impact on Dougal as much as possible.
Dougal! What to say about Dougie?? I searched over a year for a rescue pup. I looked all over Northeast Georgia and Atlanta. Every single smaller lap pup was grabbed up before I would get an email from Petfinder telling me they found a pup I would like. Before I get the message the dog would be already taken. Over and over. I even looked in Florida. I was not really wanting a puppy. I just wanted a pup that would be happy just to be around me. Eventually a Veteran, now professional dog trainer for both Military and Police dogs. He suggested a few smaller breeds that are very happy to be with their human. One of these was a miniature schnauzer. I never told him that I secretly been hoping which ever pup I found, maybe would have some schnauzer, or westie. Did some research, found the great Breeder I used. Luckily she had 4 left from a liter of mini schnauzer's. Her prices seemed fair 1200 to 1500. Sticker shocked had long set in, rescues and humane societies are charging hundreds to adopt. Dougal was the only pup with the ash coloring. The rest were black. He was just so cute. So Dougal is 7 months. Dougal is crate trained, he sleeps in his crate at night, or when he may be left alone. Here's a bit of advice, he will do just about anything for a treat. He now understands that if he goes into his crate when needed, he gets a treat! He is house trained. But, I want to be transparent. We do not have a backyard to speak of and certainly not fenced. So we take hom out to his own area,not in the front yard, but we inherited this oddly placed area beside the house. It is bordered by a brick type border, large area, red wood chipped. It was a perfect spot. He now knows that's his place for business. I always go with him and even put him on the leash at times. This means that I have to stand out there with him, day or night, until he's done. His biggest vice? He needs to either go on a walk, he's great on leash.Or some fenced yard to takebhis time. Dougal is awesome with small children, even toddlers. Lately he has started chewing, so I have toys for him all over. Loves taking walks. Loves fetching. He is in great health, i can provide a Vet report. Current on all shots. Takes heartworm,tic,flea meds every month. He weighs about 14 pounds. Dougal loves to hit the road!He has been on several road trips! He has airline approved crate,on wheels. I love this boy. He needs a family to play with abd grow. I will meet you somewhere.
